Our family's lineage of Naadi interpretation spans five generations: Sri Veerapa (1892–1962), the first generation, who collected bundles from the British beginning around 1940 but did not read them himself; Sri Pakiriswamy (1916–1976), the second generation and founder of the family's Naadi center; Sri Kaliyamoorthy (1941–present), the third generation; Sri K. Ravi (1966–present), the fourth; and Sri Eashwar (1993–present), the fifth. During the British colonial period, Sri Pakiriswamy was entrusted with the care of numerous ancient palm leaf bundles housed in several locations, including the Sarasvati Mahal Library in Thanjavur, the Vaitheeswaran Koil temple, and the Adi Vaidyanatha Swamy temple—an older temple five kilometers from the present Vaitheeswaran Koil. Six hundred bundles from this older temple came into the possession of Sri Pakiriswamy and his family.
Sri Kaliyamoorthy's account holds that the British did not auction or lease the bundles but rather handed them over to the Valluvar families directly. However the transfer occurred, the outcome was the same: these families became the primary custodians of the surviving Naadi manuscripts.
Thousands of bundles have been destroyed over the decades for lack of proper preservation.
In this one family alone, approximately four hundred bundles have been lost. Some they are trying to restore, but many are gone forever. After the British left India, Sri Pakiriswamy safeguarded the remaining manuscripts and dedicated himself to their systematic study. He trained his son, Sri Kaliyamoorthy, in the sacred art of reading Naadi palm leaves. From Kaliyamoorthy onward, the family has faithfully preserved this tradition, continuing to serve seekers from India and across the world.
